  About Senegal

Geography
Senegal is located on the south of the Sénégal River in western Africa. It is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south. The Gambia lies almost entirely within Senegal, surrounded on the north, east and south; from its western coast. Dakar is the capital city of Senegal, located on the Cape Verde Peninsula on the country's Atlantic coast.

History
Once a colony of France, Senegal became independent on June 20, 1960. Tropical Senegal is lauded for beauties both natural and human. With its suave capital, Dakar - many travelers' favorite among African cities - and its entourage of internationally known musicians, Senegal brings in more visitors than any other country in the region.

According to Senegal Travel Africa Magazine:
“Senegal is one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in Africa and yet remains relatively little known. A stable democracy, friendly people, bearable climate and an efficient communication system combine to make this one of the most accessible of African nations.”

Politically Stable and Safe
Senegal is well known for its tradition of hospitality and the warmth and openness of its people. Its culture is immensely rich and diverse. Senegal is also internationally recognized as a stable democracy and a very safe to be in.

Climate
Senegal is characterized by climatic variation between coastal and inland areas. It is warm throughout the year and people enjoy sunshine every single day. With only two seasons spreading from October to May (dry season) and June to September (rainy season), the temperature ranges between 20-27°C and 30-35°C respectively.

Population and languages
The population of Senegal is about 9.5 million inhabitants, with an average density of 48 inhabitants per km² and over 25% of the population living in the Dakar region. Quite a few national languages (Wolof, Pular, Soninke, Sereer, Mandinka, Diola, etc...) are spoken. French is the official language used in Administration and Business. Wolof is the most widely understood and spoken throughout the country. English, mandatory at Junior and High School, is widely spoken.
